New Richmond Cardinals

New Richmond High School was opened in 1910, and in the early years of Montgomery County basketball, the Cardinals fielded one of the best teams in the county.  In 1914 they made it to the final sixteen in the Indiana state high school tournament losing to Lebanon in the semi-finals.  In 1915, although they lost to Wingate in the sectional tournament, the Cardinals, because of the selection method used for the state tournament, advanced to the Elite Eight in the Indiana state high school tournament.  One of the leading players of that 1915 team was James Alexander who scored 62 points in one game, the all time record for New Richmond players.  New Richmond lost to Wingate in the final game of the first Montgomery County Tournament played in 1932, but in 1933 the Cardinals came back and won their only County Tournament championship.  New Richmond won one sectional (1934).
